Press Release-”Shear Genius” Kicks Off June 25

BRAVO’S “SHEAR GENIUS” RETURNS FOR SEASON TWO AND STYLISTS CUT OR GET CUT

THE SECOND SEASON OF BRAVO’S “SHEAR GENIUS” FOLLOWS 12 SKILLED STYLISTS AS THEY CUT OR GET CUT

Series Premieres Wednesday, June 25 At 10 PM ET/PT

NEW YORK April 30, 2008 Lather. Rinse. Compete. Bravo turns the spotlight on high-end hair styling with the premiere of the second season of the creative competition series “Shear Genius” on Wednesday, June 25 at 10 PM ET/PT. Hosted by Golden Globe nominated actress, designer and entrepreneur Jaclyn Smith, “Shear Genius” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the competitive and creative world of high-end hairstyling. Famed celebrity hairstylist Kim Vo and Allure beauty editor Kelly Atterton join the series this season as lead judges, and accomplished stylist Rene Fris returns as the competitors’ mentor.

Bravo’s nationwide search for talented hair stylists unearthed a group of gifted competitors from all over the country who will vie for the ultimate title of “Shear Genius,” $100,000 in seed money courtesy of Nexxus Salon Hair Care, an apprenticeship with Nexxus and a chance to style hair for an Allure magazine feature. This season, every challenge will be done on living hair models, and with challenges that range from cutting hair blind-folded to styling with food products that include caramel and even mustard, you can bet the drama will be bigger than ever. In each episode, host Smith, delivers the news to the chosen winning and losing stylist with input from Atterton and Vo, as well as a lineup of guest judges. Some stylists will get “cut” early and others will “blow away” the competition.

The stylists face two challenges per episode the short cut challenge testing technical hairstyling skills and the elimination challenge, testing creativity and advanced skills. Every challenge will be inventive and extraordinary, pushing them out of their comfort zone and requiring more than just finesse with a comb and scissors. The stylists will also need to possess the ability to service the client’s needs, manage a staff and work as part of a team, simultaneously, in order to make it in the competition.

  • Game #1: “Shopping Spree” (dinette set, tennis ball machine, 23 games, and vanity sink). She must spend over $3,300 on three items. She picks the dinette set ($1,238), vanity sink ($1,028), and tennis ball machine ($1,049). Since the three are over $3,300, she wins.
  • New Contestant: Alister Shirazi
  • Second Item Up for Bid: Home theater sound system-Alister=$159, Christina=$650, Paul=$700, Colin=$435. Actual retail price is $1,000 so Paul wins.
  • Game #2: “Squeeze Play” (barrel sauna). The price is not $52,495 but the two fives are correct. The 2, 4, or 9 must go. He gets rid of the 2 for a price of $5,495. Unfortunately the price is $5,245.
  • New Contestant: Shawn Goolsby
  • Third Item Up for Bid: Sofa-Shawn=$1,750, Colin=$1,335, Alister=$899, Christina=$1,850. Actual retail price is $2,899 so Christina wins.

The last number is either a 5 or 7. She thinks it is a 5 and is correct. Her four cards must be worth 25 cents. The first card is worth $2.00 so she wins right away.
  • Showcase Showdown #1: Paul=$0.50 + $0.90 = $1.40 (over), Janice=$0.60 (stays), Christina=$0.15 + $0.65 = $0.80. Christina wins.

He wins both prizes.
  • New Contestant: Nicholas Klinefelter
  • Fifth Item Up for Bid: Desk and hutch-Nicholas=$750, Glenna=$951, Shawn=$751, Colin=$699. Actual retail price is $849 so Shawn wins.

  • Game #6: “Hi Lo” (bedroom group). She must pick the items with the three highest prices and the three with the lowest. She thinks the Gold Bond ($9.12), Freeze Away ($13.99), and the Azo ($6.99) are the highest. She’s incorrect because the chocolates are more expensive at $7.99.
  • Showcase Showdown #2: Shawn=$0.50 + $0.50 = $1.00, Tracy=$0.25 + $0.25 = $0.50, Alister=$0.20 + $0.20 = $0.40. Shawn wins $1,000 and gets a bonus spin. His spin doesn’t go all the way around so he doesn’t win any additional money.
  • Showcases: Shawn (home workout center, Hovercraft), Bids $25,500. Christina (gardening tools, trip to Spain, Ford Mustang V-6 Coupe Deluxe), Bids $23,000. Review-”Farmer Wants a Wife”

farmerwantsawife.jpg

“Farmer Wants a Wife” isn’t as bad as the title would make you think it is but it definitely isn’t a must-watch even for reality fans. Most young women that enjoy dating shows should enjoy it but the show feels a bit fake and that could turn some people off.

“Farmer Wants a Wife” follows Matt, a successful farmer who hasn’t had as much luck in the dating world. In his small town, most girls either move to the city or marry their high school sweethearts. Ten city girls who are sick of the city dating scene head to Matt’s town for a change of pace. Each week, one will be eliminated until Matt finds the girl he wants to marry.

The show is occasionally funny and entertaining but I thought it felt rather fake. I’m sure Matt really is a farmer but because he is so good-looking it just doesn’t seem like it. It doesn’t help that he is forced into hosting duties and winds up sounding like a game show host. Also, many of the women seem more interested in acting gigs than Matt. This is especially true with uber bitch Josie. She thinks she is a “10+” and calls all the other girls gold diggers. There is also the stereotypical bible thumper and the party girl along with a few real girls.

Overall, if you like shows like “The Bachelor” or “The Simple Life,” you could do much worse than “Farmer Wants a Wife.” It fits in well with The CW’s demos and will likely be at least a moderate hit.

Here’s a preview of tonight’s episode:

Recap-The Riches S2.E7 The Lying King (April 29, 2008)

theriches1.jpg

Wayne, Dahlia, and Di Di: Wayne, Dahlia and Di Di go to Jim’s funeral. Dahlia is still not talking to Wayne. When Di Di asks what happened Dahlia tells her the truth about Dale killing Pete. Di Di can’t believe Wayne would help Dale cover up his crime. At the funeral Nina yells at everyone since she is still angry that Jim was gay and lied to her for so many years. Dahlia takes Nina to her apartment (the one she got for the parole officer). Dahlia tries to comfort Nina and ends up telling her that she is an ex-con and tells her about all the lies she and Wayne are telling. Nina asks Dahlia what she should do about all the lying since Chet (the PI) came by her house the other day asking about Pete. Nina tells Dahlia that she needs to face the truth and stop lying. Meanwhile Di Di and Reilly spend the day together and break into people’s houses. They get to talking about how greedy some people are. They realize that they are a lot alike. They end up sleeping together. Meanwhile Dahlia is feeling all alone since she is avoiding Wayne, and Dahlia and Cael won’t pick up their phones. Dahlia tries to call Maurice (her parole officer) but he won’t pick up. Dahlia then heads to one of her neighbors to get some drugs. She is about to do the drugs but realizes that she has come too far to throw it all away for some drugs. Dahlia heads to Maurice’s house. Maurice heads outside and asks why she is there. Dahlia asks him for help. Maurice ends up kissing her. This is not what Dahlia was looking for so she drives away.

Hugh and the Bayou Hills Construction: Hugh calls Wayne and tells him to come to the Bayou Hills construction site. An accident with a broken chain dropped a beam on a man’s legs and he will probably never be able to walk again. Hugh thinks he is having so many problems with the construction since karma is out to get him. The contractor meets with Wayne and Hugh and he tells them that he doesn’t think it was an accident. Wayne tells Hugh that he needs to forget about the construction problems and focus on the election since he needs to win if they want a chance to even finish the Bayou Hills project. Wayne hires a new contractor and then gets Hugh ready for his press conference. At the press conference Wayne is approached by the investor that is blackmailing him and he tells Wayne that he needs to backstab Hugh or he is going to turn him over to the cops. Wayne then gets a call from Reilly (the contractor that is friends with Dale). He tells Wayne that he is willing to take over the construction after what recently happened. Wayne realizes that they were responsible for the accident. Wayne hires some Russian mobsters and they kick Reilly and his friends off the Bayou Hills property. Wayne hires a new contractor. Wayne breaks into Dale’s office and finds a bunch of prison visitor passes. Wayne wonders who Dale was visiting and where he went since he disappeared a couple days earlier. Before Wayne leaves Hugh thanks Wayne for all his help making it harder for Wayne to backstab him.

Sam and a Girl From School: Sam seems to have developed a crush on a girl from school. One day she comes by the house and helps him with one of his dresses.

Cael and Quinn: Cael and Rosaline are still together and it seems like they have gotten really close. Cael and Quinn see two traveler’s fighting and they break up the fight. Quinn tells all the travelers that they need to stop fighting and team up in order to help one another. He says if he and a Malloy (Cael) can work out their differences the rest of them can as well. Cael is still upset with Wayne. Quinn tells Cael that Wayne is only doing what he is doing in order to support his family. He says that he actually admires Wayne and says he is a role model for the other travelers. Cael decides to call Dahlia and she is so glad to talk to him. When Cael falls asleep, Quinn takes his phone and calls Wayne. He tells Wayne that he is going to do what he says since he has Cael.

Quotable: April 29, 2008

According to Jim:

Jim: “Can’t a man class up his breakfast a little?”

Kyle: “I’m not a moron. Cupcakes grow on bushes.”

Jim: “I haven’t seen this much orange since my community service.”

Jim (to Andy): “You are an idiot for being friends with me.”

Beauty and the Geek:

Joe: “There was something very spiritual about the cake.”

Matt (one of his steps to getting one of the girls): “Then go downstairs and try out the big guns.”

Cara: “I got an ouchie.”

Reaper:

Sock (to Ben): “Now listen to me, Ben. I’m going to spit some scientific fact at you. The longer most men are in a relationship, the happier they get. The opposite is true for the lady folk, okay? So we would just like to see you happy making a woman miserable, like we’re both doing.”

Sam: “I mean, what is he, a serial rapist?”
Devil: “Wow, you go to the dark place fast.”

Sock (to Ben after he marries Sara): “You are too stupid to exist.”

Sam: “What did you… did you kill him, is he dead?”
Devil: “I don’t know, Sam, I’m not a doctor.”
Sam: “He’s still breathing.”
Devil: “Oh, thank heavens.”

Sam (after Ben and Sock kidnap Andi and put her in the trunk): “This isn’t solving the problem, this is adding a felony to the problem.”

Ben (after Andi runs away after seeing Tony as a demon): “What’s she going to say, I saw a big gay demon?”

Sock (to Andi): “I knew that locking you in the back of my trunk was for the best.”

According to Jim S7.E14 “The Chaperone” (April 29, 2008)

accordingtojim_andy.jpg

Jim wears a suit to breakfast because he doesn’t have any other clean clothes. He also expects the girls to wear a bikini and an extremely warm suit to school. Kyle wears a dress but the sad thing is, Jim actually did his laundry. Andy has a new girlfriend (Emily) who is cute and nice. He worries that she’s too good for him and Jim will screw things up. When Andy and Emily come over for dinner, Cheryl makes a conversation cheat sheet for Jim but he still struggles to make conversation. Emily’s girls want to go to the Glitter Pops concert that Ruby and Gracie are going to. Emily can’t take them because she is going to an award ceremony with Andy. Jim offers to take them and Emily accepts. However, Andy isn’t comfortable with him taking the girls because “he’s him.” Jim tells him he’s a good parent for his two kids, Andy has to remind him he has three kids. Andy also brings up several of the incidents Jim has had (punching a Packers fan, losing the girls for six hours at a dog track, and getting into a high speed chase because he thought he saw Coach Ditka). Jim decides to still take them so he can save Andy’s relationship. He tells him that if you are scared of the woman you are dating, the relationship won’t last.

Jim creates a master plan. He makes the four girls wear orange shirts and hold glow sticks so he can easily find them. However, pretty much every girl in the audience is wearing orange and carrying glow sticks. Andy gets nervous at the award ceremony. He has to call Jim and instantly knows that he lost them. He skips out on seeing Emily’s speech to help Jim find the girls. Jim decides the only way to spot the girls is to head on stage. He plays his harmonica while Andy finds the girls. The crowd digs Jim’s harmonica skills so the girls call him the coolest father ever. They also got to meet the band but got banned from the arena. Jim tells Andy to just tell Emily what happened. He doesn’t want to so Jim does it himself. She doesn’t mind since she has lost them at a concert too.

Recap-Reaper S1.E15 Coming to Grips (April 29, 2008)

reaper.jpg

Sam is in the apartment getting everything ready for diner with Andy. Tony shows up (in demon form) and starts strangling Sam since he thinks Sam ratted them out to the Devil. Sam eventually gets Tony to realize that he was betrayed by the Devil as well. Tony feels bad about strangling Sam so he helps him cook diner for Andi. Tony tells Sam that he is going into hiding in order to create a new rebellion against the Devil. Andi shows up and hears Sam talking to Tony. Tony leaves in time and Sam pretends that he was talking to himself.

The next day at work we find out that Sock and Josie are back together. Ben is upset since both Sock and Sam have the girls of their dreams and he hasn’t been able to find that woman. Sam and Sock look at Ben’s list of the perfect woman and they tell him that his standards are too high and he needs to get rid off his list if he ever wants to get a good girlfriend. Sam is then transported to the park where the Devil tells him about the next soul. The Devil points out some kids playing soccer and tells Sam that the soul was the father to all those kids. The soul’s name is Jack King. In life he worked at a sperm bank. When women came into the sperm bank they picked a candidate that they wanted. Instead of giving them the sperm they wanted he ended up using his own (he thinks that highly of himself). Jack now has hundreds of children. Sam gets the vessel and it turns out to be a retractable scythe. Andy sees Sam with it and she starts to get suspicious.

Sam and Sock head to the sperm bank in order to capture Jack. Andy follows them to the sperm bank since she is getting suspicious of Sam. Sam and Sock confront Jack in his office and Jack tries to weasel his way out. Sam ends up cutting his head off. He happens to do this in front of the window and Andy sees it. The soul happens to not be sucked up though. Jack’s body attacks Sam while Jack’s head tells it what to do. Sam ends up cutting off one of the hands. He then stabs his body and head with the scythe capturing the soul. Sam doesn’t suck up the hand though and the hand ends up following them out of the sperm bank.

While Sam and Sock are capturing the soul, Ben is at the Work Bench cafeteria. Ben talks with a  co-worker (Sara) about how he can’t find the perfect woman. She tells Ben that he will eventually find that woman. When Sam returns to work Andi attacks him. She wants to know how he could chop someone’s head off. She threatens to call the cops (I would think the normal person already would have). Sam tells her to trust him. He tells her that he needs to talk with someone and then he can tell her the truth. She gives him 24 hours. Sam heads to the DMV and tries to send a message to the Devil. The Devil transports Sam to an adult video store. The Devil shows Sam that Jack is still around. The hand that Sam left regenerated into a full Jack. The Devil tells Sam that he needs to capture all the part of Jack. Sam then asks the Devil to be able to tell Andy the truth or she will go to the cops. The Devil agrees to let Sam tell Andi the truth in exchange for a future favor. Sam agrees to the deal.

Sock and Ben think it was stupid for Sam to agree to another deal with the Devil. Sara then surprises the guys when she joins them in the kitchen. Ben explains that he married Sara in order to help her gain her green card. He tells the guys that she paid him $1,600 to do it. She needs to stay at the apartment for a while though because immigration will check in order to see if they just got married for her to get a green card.

Sam, Sock and Ben tell Andi the truth at the bar. She walks away since she thinks they are just making up stories. Andi tells Sam that if he doesn’t give her a truthful response she will go to the cops. Sam heads to the sperm bank trying to find Jack. Jack is not there but Sam does take Jack’s planner which shows all the expected due dates of his future children. The Devil shows up and tells Sam that Jack won’t return to the sperm bank since Sam would know where he was. The Devil also tells Sam that he knew Andi wasn’t going to believe him. He tells Sam that if he can’t handle Andi he will handle her himself.

We then see Andi being kidnapped. It turns out that Sock and Ben kidnapped her and stuffed her into the trunk in order to get her to believe them. Sam tries to talk with Andi but she is unwilling to listen since she is tied up in the trunk. The guys decides that they will scare Andi into believing them. They take her to Tony’s house and when they arrive they see a bunch of demons leaving the house (Tony’s newest army). They untie Andy. They have Tony then reveal his demon self and Andi is so scared she runs out of the house and steals the guys car in order to get away. Tony takes the guys back to their apartment. Tony tells Sam that if Andy truly loves him that she will come back to him.

Andy doesn’t show up at work the next day. Sam checks Jack’s planner and realizes that one of his children are going to be born today. Sam, Sock, and Ben decide to head to the hospital. Before they leave the Devil meets Sam and tells him that he didn’t resolve the Andi problem so he did. The Devil ended up tying her up in the trunk again. Sam releases her. Andi tells Sam that she believes him but she can’t handle him being a reaper since she is now scared of him. The guys shows up at the hospital and Ben ends up finding his perfect woman (the secretary at the hospital). Sam finds Ben and corners him in a room. Jack cuts off his hand and throws it into a vent in order to get away. Sock chases after the hand. Sam fights off the handless Jack. Andi shows up. Sam loses the scythe and Andi ends up sucking up Jack. Sam then tries to find Sock and Jack’s hand. Jack’s hand regenerates the rest of his body. Jack attacks Sock but Sam arrives in time to suck it up.

The guys head to the bar to celebrate. Ben meets Sara and asks her if he can date the woman from the hospital. Sara won’t let him since she doesn’t want immigration to possibly find out. Andi shows up at the bar and tells Sam that she isn’t upset with him anymore since she realizes that he was protecting her. Andi does wonder how Sam, Sock, and Ben have survived so long since she thought they should be dead already. Sam is then transported to Tony’s house by the Devil. The Devil tells Sam that it is time for his favor that he promised to do. The Devil wants Sam to spy on Tony’s group and report back to him. Sam doesn’t want to do it but the Devil tells Sam that if he doesn’t he will harm Andi. Tony sees Sam outside and welcomes him into his house.

Recap-Beauty and the Geek S5.E8 Snowbound (April 29, 2008)

jason.jpgkristina.jpg

Winter Wonderland: When the rest of the teams see that Tara and Joe survived the elimination room there are some mixed reaction. Some are happy and some aren’t. They don’t have long to think either way since Mike heads upstairs and tells them all that they are all leaving the mansion. They are heading to the Big Bear resort. Everyone is so excited to go except for Chris who just wants to win the game. Before they leave the gang eats a cake that Greg made before being eliminated. On the trip to Big Bear everyone shares stories about what the most dangerous thing they have ever done. When they get to the cabin everyone has fun in the snow except for Chris who just goes off by himself. While everyone else is out in the snow, Jason and Joe form a friendship in the sauna. Joe eventually leaves the sauna and starts having a snowball fight with Tara. We find out that Joe has had a crush on Tara for a long time but Tara doesn’t return the same feelings. While at the cabin Tara and Joe get closer. This makes Joe jealous. Joe is offended even more when he sees that Tara created a wall of pillows since they need to share a bed. Joe ends up sleeping on a bear rug on the floor.Matt and Cara also get closer as Matt teaches Cara how to play the piano.

The Sled Challenge:  In this challenge the geeks and beauties have to work together. The beauties have to assemble a sled. All their parts are stuck in a snowman. The beauties need to look a sample of the sled they are supposed to make. They then need to communicate to the geeks what pieces they need (there are extra pieces so they need to communicate well or they will get the wrong pieces. When the sled is complete they need to use the sled to go down a course and make it to the end without falling off. Whoever crosses the finish line first wins. Jason and Kristina end up finishing their sled first and they get to the top of the mountain. They lose steam and never make it to the finish line. They try and try and can’t make it the whole way. Chris and Cara finish their sled but they fall on their first try. Tommy and Amanda finish their sled and end up crossing the finish line first. Since Tommy and Amanda won they are safe from elimination. Mike tells the rest of the contestants that they will all get one vote to be able to vote off any team beside Tommy and Amanda.

The Vote: All the teams debate who they should vote for based on where everyone is going to vote. Joe and Tara end up getting into a fight over Tara’s relationship with Tommy. The votes end up going as follows: Jason and Kristina-Joe and Tara, Joe and Tara-Jason and Kristina, Chris and Cara-Matt and Leticia, Matt and Leticia-Chris and Cara. Since everyone ends up getting one vote Tommy and Amanda become the tie-breaking vote. They decide to both pick a team that they want to be safe. Tommy picks Matt and Leticia. Amanda picks Joe and Tara. They then decide to eliminate Jason and Kristina since they think they are a bigger threat.
