Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? S2.E23 (January 31, 2008)

are_you_smarter_than_a_5th_grader2.jpg

Kalyn (a 19-year-old college sophomore, game continued from last week):

  • Her progress from last week
  • Q4 (2nd Grade Physical Education): “In a standard baseball game, how many defensive players are on the field at any given time?” She’s not sure so she peeks at Mackenzie’s paper. She wrote 9, Kalyn takes her answer and is correct.
  • Q5 (3rd Grade Anatomy): “True or false? The kidneys are part of the human digestive system.” Once again, she isn’t sure so she copies Sierra’s paper. She would have said true and would have been wrong. Lucky for her, Sierra wrote false.
  • Q6 (3rd Grade Measurements): “How many cups are in 5 U.S. liquid quarts?” She goes with 20 cups. She’s correct for $50,000.
  • Q7 (4th Grade Social Studies): “Who was the very first U.S. Secretary of State?” She drops out with her $50,000. The answer was Thomas Jefferson.

Travis Proffit:

  • Q1 (2nd Grade Grammar): “True or false? A sentence cannot contain both a past tense and a future tense verb.” He doesn’t know for sure but locks in with false and is correct.
  • Q2 (3rd Grade Math): “Olivia has three marbles. Sierra has fifty times as many marbles as Olivia. Cody has five times as many marbles as Sierra. How many marbles does Cody have?” He goes with 750 and is correct.
  • Q3 (2nd Grade Spelling): “What word in the following sentence comes first alphabetically? “An antelope and an ant already ate all the apples.”" After a confusing thought process, he goes with “all” and is correct.
  • Q4 (3rd Grade Animal Science): “In terms of average weight, what is the largest species of snake in the world?” He’s pretty sure it is the anaconda and locks in with that answer. It’s the correct answer.
  • Q5 (1st Grade English): “True or false? The plural form of the word “roof” is “rooves.” He goes with true but is incorrect. It’s false because the answer is “roofs.” Nathan does save him.
  • Q6 (4th Grade Anatomy): “The pituitary gland is part of what system in the human body? A. Circulatory, B. Endocrine, C. Digestive” He peeks at Nathan’s paper. He would have went with endocrine if he didn’t have a help, Nathan agrees with that answer so he goes with it. It’s the correct answer for $50,000.
  • Q7 (1st Grade Music): “What is the name of the following musical instrument?” Obviously, you won’t be able to play along with this one but the answer is tuba. Travis locks in with tuba and is correct again.
  • Q8 (5th Grade U.S. History): “What U.S. Revolutionary War hero is credited with saying, “I have not yet begun to fight”? Despite having a copy left, he drops out with his $100,000.

Ghost Hunters International S1.E4 “Haunted Village” (January 30, 2008)

ghosthuntersinternational3.jpg

Black Horse Inn in Pluckley Village: Pluckley Village has been named the most haunted village in England. The Black Horse Inn has had reports of glasses falling from the bar. There are also reports of spirits named Elizabeth (a young child who was murdered there) and Will (who was the old bailiff and now watches the place). The client has consistently felt a cold spot in back of the bar.

The team decides to perform an experiment by using the EMF detectors as an alarm letting them know when spirits enter or exit a room. Andy and Robb check out the bar and quickly find an alternate explanation for the cold spot. There is a definite draft coming through the door. They follow it and it goes right to where the client was standing. Just as the two say that they haven’t had any paranormal yet, the EMF alarm goes off where “Will” is usually sitting. Barry and Brian check out the bar next. Barry sense a spirit and the atmosphere changes. Barry felt something pressing down on his shoulders. The EMF detector goes off and Brian feels a huge cold spot. Both think they saw what looked like a shadow starting to manifest.

Robb sends in the girls next. They ask Will a lot of questions and after nearly every single one, he gives them an answer by setting off the EMF alarm. If legit, it is actually quite amazing evidence. Donna thinks it was like they were having a real conversation with Will.

Reveal: The team provides an alternate explanation to the cold spot in the bar. Barry’s personal experience (hands pressing down on his shoulders) is brought up along with an amazing video of the EMF detector going up to 2 after nearly every question. The team also found an EVP after Barry’s shoulders were touched. He asked it if it was “playing games.” They get a response of “perhaps.” Historical research found the bailiffs last name but there have been no reports of any young girls being murdered. Overall, Robb thinks the place is haunted.

Elvey Farm in Pluckley Village: There have been reports of orbs and knocking noises in the guest room. A spirit apparently says “I will” in the farm house (there was a farmer who lived there who killed himself, these were his final words to his wife). The “screaming woods” unsurprisingly has reports of screaming spirits.

Robb and Andy head to the guest room to try to debunk the orbs. Since a road borders the room, Andy goes outside and shines a flashlight through the window. When the curtains are closed, they get what definitely could be mistaken as an orb. They next perform a thermal sweep in the barn and notice a large amount of rats. One of the reports of activity was scratching in the barn so this could definitely explain it.

Donna and Barry check out the guest room but get no luck. Andy and Robb check out the screaming woods and within twenty seconds, they hear a scream. They continuously hear them then hear footsteps coming towards them. This happens a lot and at one point. it sounded like they were just ten feet away. Thermal doesn’t spot any animals so it could be paranormal. Donna and Shannon are sent in with no information on what Andy and Robb found. They hear noises and some very heavy footsteps. Brian and Barry check the woods out last. They get lost and Brian swears he heard something say “ha ha.” The two are so lost that Robb has to honk a car horn. This still doesn’t help so Robb and Andy find a new use for the thermal camera, finding lost team members.

Reveal: Robb provides alternate explanations for the orbs and the sounds in the barn. EVP never picked up “I will” but Robb does have an alternate explanation for this. There isĀ  a very high EMF near the stairs that may be causing people to hear things that aren’t there. The recorder did pick up one of the screams in the screaming woods but the team researched the woods and found out that it could definitely be a vixen’s (female fox’s) call. Brian’s “ha ha” could definitely have been a bird call. Overall, Robb doesn’t feel that the place is haunted.

American Idol S7.E6 “Miami, FL Auditions” (January 30, 2008)

american_idol11.jpg

Shannon McGough (18 years old, Okeechobee, FL): She works at her parent’s meat store and definitely wouldn’t be upset to leave that job. She’s definitely loud but not a great singer. Simon didn’t have a great night and is now feeling even worse. He couldn’t even understand any of the words. He thinks her mouth is doing weird things, like she’s eating while singing. Obviously, nobody gives her a yes vote.

Robbie Carrico (25 years old, Melbourne, FL): A former member of a boy band who is now trying rock. Simon is on the fence but gives him a yes vote. The other two judges also vote yes.

Ghaleb Emachah (27 years old, Miami, FL): Originally from Venezuela. Plays harmonica and the piano. Simon says that “he would like him if he was drunk.” Paula thinks he has a good voice but a little bit too much of an accent. Randy votes yes based on the voice. Paula breaks the tie by welcoming him to Hollywood.

Corliss Smith (20 years old, Jacksonville, FL): A woman who likes big men. Simon sees Randy’s big smile and has her sing to Randy. Randy thinks she has a great voice. She moves on with three yes votes.

Brittany Wescott (20 years old, Jacksonville, FL): The past singer’s best friend. She also moves on.

Susanne Toon (21 years old, Clearwater, FL): Did musicals until she got pregnant at 18 and is now a single mother. She hasn’t sang in three years and is sick of struggling. All of the judges vote yes.

Ramiele Malubay (19 years old, Miramar, FL): She wants to be the first Asian-American Idol. Paula likes her but Simon thinks she is more like a hotel singer. Randy thinks she has a powerful voice for a smaller woman. Simon votes no but the other two give her a yes.

Syesha Mercado (20 years old, Miami, FL): She thinks positive and is having a lot of happy moments lately. In the past, she had some bad moments. Her dad struggled with alcohol but has now graduated from rehab. She has a very loud and powerful voice. Both Randy and Paula loved it but Simon thinks she put a bit too much into it. He does give her a yes as do the other two.

Natashia Blach (29 years old, Fort Collins, CO): Randy calls her a throwback singer and she gets three yes votes.

Ilsy Lorena Pinot (28 years old, Miami, FL): A quick audition but she gets a ticket to Hollywood.

A series of bad auditions:

  • Ben Hausbach (26 years old, Melbourne, FL)
  • Carroy Bethea (27 years old, Fort Myers, FL): Simon thinks he went a “wee” bit over the top.
  • Grant Rhea (24 years old, Miami, FL)
  • Fabienne Hyppolite (28 years old, Hollywood, FL): Throughout the audition, she has one of her hands over her ear. Since she sings horribly, he suggests that she put the other one over the other ear.
  • Richard Valles (19 years old, Tampa, FL): Randy thinks it sounded like he was singing out of his nose.

Julie Dubela (16 years old, Stratham, NH): One of the top twenty on American Juniors four years ago. Simon jokes about loving that show so much. Simon doesn’t like all the acting and over-rehearsed elements. Both Simon and Randy also don’t like her voice. Randy says she has a voice in their somewhere but doesn’t think she is ready yet. Nobody gives her a yes vote. Simon suggests she become an actress.

Brandon Black (20 years old, Pompano Beach, FL): A guy who enters running and yelling nonsense. It was apparently supposed to be funny but Simon didn’t think so. He sings “I’ll Make Love to You” to Paula then does his own song “I’m Going to be the Next American Idol.” Simon says the audition was “verging on desperation.” Obviously, he doesn’t move on.

In total, 17 golden tickets were given to Miami singers.

Review-Daddy Day Camp (Blu-Ray and DVD)

daddy-day-camp.jpg

  • Release Date: January 29th, 2008
  • Price: $26.95 (Blu-Ray) and $19.99 (DVD)
  • Rated: PG (Mild Bodily Humor and Language)
  • Runtime: 1 hour and 29 minutes
  • Publisher: Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • Genre: Comedy, Kids
  • Starring: Cuba Gooding Jr., Lochlyn Munro, Paul Rae, Richard Gant, Spencir Bridges
  • Director: Fred Savage
  • Special Features: How I Spent My Summer Making Daddy Day Camp, What I Learned at Camp: Interactive Quiz

If you don’t know already Daddy Day Camp is the sequel to Daddy Day Care. Charlie Hinton and Phil Ryerson take over running a summer camp after they discover that the camp they used to go to has been rundown for quite a while and their former rival camp has expanded and wants to buy their former camp in order to expand their own camp. Charlie and Phil also decide to run the camp themselves since they refuse to let them go to a camp run by Charlie’s childhood rival. With the camp falling apart and the bank about to seize the camp and his house Charlie has to ask his father for help in bringing the camp back up to snuff. Will Charlie and Phil be able to resurrect their childhood camp or will the bank seize the camp and the camp will be gone forever?

Pros: If you read further on you will discover that I didn’t enjoy Daddy Day Camp that much. This is coming from a 20 year old though. I think families with younger children will probably enjoy the movie quite a bit. It’s like most kids movies. Kids really enjoy them and sometimes their parents do as well. If you aren’t a parent or a small child the movie doesn’t really appeal to you. The other pro is that Daddy Day Camp has a lot of humor similar to the first movie (although not nearly as good). SOME adults that enjoyed the first movie will probably enjoy it (not many though).

Cons: Daddy Day Camp is a poor sequel to Daddy Day Care. I actually really liked Daddy Day Care but Daddy Day Camp seems like a cheaply put together sequel in order to make money off the first film. If you are going into this film after liking Daddy Day Care and are expecting as good of movie you will be seriously disappointed. Most sequels are never better than the original but Daddy Day Camp didn’t even seem to try and compete with the original. The movie couldn’t even get a single cast member from the first film in the sequel even though I think they are portraying the same characters from the first film. I hate it when studios decide to put sequels out to good movies and then put barely any effort into making them good.

Special Features: Overall nothing special. You get your typical making of feature and a quiz that only small children will enjoy. Simply put no added reason to buy the dvd.

Is Blu-Ray Worth It?: I would say probably not. Yes it is always nice to see movies in high definition over standard definition but this movie doesn’t receive a huge upgrade watching it in high definition. Obviously everything looks nicer but it’s not crucial that you have to watch it in high def. It’s not like there is great landscapes or a lot of action in this movie. Pretty much the main upgrade in high def is in the actors themselves. I would say don’t buy this movie in high def unless you have already gone the route of buying everything in high def.

The Lowdown: Daddy Day Camp is not a terrible movie but it also doesn’t even try to be anything better than average. If you loved the original and were planning on watching the second because you liked the first you might want to consider. It is not nearly as good as the original. In the end I would recommend this movie to families with small children and people who in general like most kids movies they watch.

American Idol S7.E5 “Omaha, NE Auditions” (January 29, 2008)

american_idol9.jpg

Paula’s plane is delayed so only Simon and Randy get to judge the early auditions.

Chris Bernheisel (24 years old, Fremont, NE): He has waited to audition for seven seasons. This is the greatest moment of his life and his dream come true (he tears up talking about it). He also bribes the judges with a stuffed dog for Randy and an England shirt for Simon. He’s not very good and he does some crazy dance moves including a handstand. Simon tells him he likes him and the bribes but not the singing. Simon does invite him to report at the finale for his FOX affiliate. He compares it to winning the lottery.

Jason Rich (21 years old, Stout, IA): Comes from a very, very small town (just a few blocks). He’s very nervous and struggles with the lyrics. On his third attempt, he finally gets a bit more out then finally nails it on attempt #4. He has a pretty good country voice. Randy doesn’t see star power in him but thinks he has a pretty good voice. Both judges move him on to Hollywood but Simon warns him that if he forgets the lyrics again, he won’t give him another chance.

Paula finally joins the judging table.

“You Forgot the Lyrics”: The exciting game show where everybody forgets or butchers the lyrics. One of the guys sing about not knowing the lyrics. The “winner” can’t even get a single word out.

Rachel Wicker (23 years old, Richmond, MO): She loves arm-wrestling (she has won six championships) and wants to arm-wrestle Simon. He thinks she would beat him so he declines. In addition to a strong arm, she has a pretty good voice. However, Simon thinks it sounded like she was singing at the end of her career when she is only 23 right now. Randy doesn’t like the yodeling part to her voice. He does give her a yes as does Paula (Simon votes no).

Sarah Whitaker (25 years old, Council Bluffs, IA): Used to be a professional wrestler as “Lady Morg” and enjoys being the bad guy. She shows up in goth clothing and makeup then sings some song about being happy. Simon thinks it is the soundtrack to Omaha. He calls her really strange. Paula for some reason gives her a yes but she doesn’t move on. Ryan comes in and asks why they didn’t move her on. He switches jobs with Paula. He asks “how do I pretend to be overpaid for doing no work.”

Samantha Sidley (22 years old, Los Angeles, CA): Ryan sits in as a judge for this audition. Ryan likes her voice but thinks she needs to work on her confidence (she doesn’t even know if she can win the show). Simon isn’t happy with Ryan’s judging so Paula comes back in. Ryan would have said yes if his vote would have counted. The other three judges also vote yes and she moves onto Hollywood.

Others who are headed to Hollywood:

  • Elizabeth Erkert (19 years old, Springfield, IL)
  • Denise Jackson (17 years old, Madison, WI)
  • Michael Sanfilippo (19 years old, South Darrington, IL)

Angelica Puente (17 years old, Kenosha, WI): She has a really strict dad who wants his kids to do the very best they can. She moved out on him but still cares about him and wants to make him proud. She has a really powerful voice but Randy thinks she was mimicking other singers too much. He does give her a yes vote as do the others. Simon thinks with a bit of effort, she could be a great singer. She just needs to stop trying to be other singers. She calls her dad with the news and he is proud of her.

David Cook (24 years old, Tulsa, OK): A rocker who can really sing. Randy liked it but thinks he needs to show more emotion. He gets three yes votes and heads to Hollywood.

Johnny Escamilla (18 years old, Scottsbluff, NE): He thinks he brings a new taste to “American Idol.” He brings a lot of energy but doesn’t have a good voice at all. Simon calls it “everything (he) hated” in every single way from his jacket to his singing and dancing. Obviously, he doesn’t move on.

Leo Marlowe (23 years old, Charlotte, IA): All three judges vote him on to Hollywood.

Omaha sent a total of 19 singers to Hollywood.
